About Us
“Masks and puppets predate the invention of the wheel, yet remain two of the most profound tools for understanding ourselves and others. They invite us to explore identity, question communication, and embrace transformation” - Russell Dean.
Strangeface Masks has been creating masks and puppets since 2006. Led by mask maker Russell Dean (Artistic Director of Strangeface Theatre Company), we cater for all styles of mask work at all levels of engagement - from education and training to professional performance and bespoke commissions.
Our work focuses on five main areas:
Masks and Puppets for Workshop and Performance
“Where can I find masks for my students?” - This very question led to the founding of Strangeface Masks in 2006. At the time there were very few high-quality, affordable masks available to schools and colleges. This posed a challenge for drama teachers, as it is impossible to convey the creative power of mask work without students physically engaging with the masks themselves.
Strangeface stepped in to fill that gap - Initially with our durable, performance-standard range of Commedia dell’Arte masks, then expanding the collection to include other styles of mask which have been so influential in the development of the art form. These masks are designed to be used by both professional performers and in educational workshops.
...and then there were puppets!
As puppetry became a larger part of Strangeface Theatre Company’s work, it felt only natural to offer workshop puppets alongside our masks.
With the advent of globally successful theatre productions like Warhorse, The Lion King and The Life of Pi, puppetry has taken its place centre stage. As drama departments work to reflect a growing movement in modern theatre, it makes sense to offer the tools to be able to teach it.
Puppetry demands focus, dexterity, and collaboration — often even more so than mask work. Students who study puppetry develop a strong appreciation of physicality, build problem-solving skills, and deepen their understanding of group dynamics. It’s a joyful, rewarding discipline which compliments and enriches all aspects of drama.
Leather Theatrical Masks
Over the past two decades, Russell Dean has built a reputation as one of the UK’s leading mask makers. From our UK workshop in Kent, he creates authentic leather masks using traditional artisan methods — each one shaped on a hand-carved wooden mould or matrix, then dyed and finished by hand. The result is a range of authentic leather masks for professional use that blend character with tradition.

Custom Commissions
Russell’s diverse portfolio reflects his ability to work across a wide range of styles, materials and budgets. Over the past two decades he has created masks and puppets for theatre, film, television, schools, and private clients. Amongst others, these include Scottish Opera, RSC, Channel 4, Vamos, Blind Summit, The David Glass Ensemble, and Homunculus. He welcomes new commissions and collaborations — every project is an opportunity to create something unique.
Educational workshops
Over the past two decades, both schools and the role of drama within them have changed. Students have changed. The lasting impact of the pandemic, the rise of social media, and the constant presence of mobile technology have all contributed to increased anxiety and mental health challenges for young people.
At Strangeface Masks, we believe that the playful nature of mask and puppet work offers a powerful response to this shift. It fosters flexible thinking, encourages experimentation, and sparks imagination — all while building emotional awareness and genuine connection.
Mask and puppet work touches something deep and instinctive within us. It’s not just about performance — it’s about giving students the tools to explore identity, express emotion, and develop confidence and maturity through creativity.
Strangeface Masks provide a range of educational workshops for students of all ages. These workshops are focused on both making and using masks and puppets - teaching mask construction techniques, performance skills, ensemble dynamics, and the artistic and therapeutic applications of mask work. Workshops are tailored to drama schools, universities, theatre companies, and community groups.
Outreach
Over the years, professionals from many fields have recognised the profound value of masks and puppets beyond the stage and approached Strangeface with a request to collaborate. Consequently we have created projects for individuals and organisations supporting those with autism, ADHD, mental health challenges, those experiencing bereavement, individuals in end-of-life care, as well as people with special educational needs, disabilities, and learning difficulties.
Masks and puppets offer powerful ways to communicate, connect, and build understanding. That’s why Strangeface continues to work across educational, clinical, and community settings — not just to perform, but to transform.
