ABOUT OUR COMMEDIA MASKS

Rooted in the vibrant tradition of Italian street theatre, our Commedia dell'Arte masks are made from high-impact plastic, making them durable, lightweight, and comfortable to wear. Each mask represents a classic stock character and is designed to provoke the exaggerated physicality and emotional expression that brings Commedia characters to life.

These masks are ideal for performance and invaluable tools for workshops and actor training.

THE IL CAPITANO CHARACTER IN COMMEDIA DELL’ARTE

Il Capitano is the braggart soldier: loud, theatrical, and overflowing with exaggerated tales of military triumphs and romantic conquests. He presents himself as a fearless warrior and irresistible seducer, but beneath his grand speeches lies deep insecurity. His elaborate uniform and dramatic swagger mask a heart that is easily startled, revealing that his bold persona is more performance than truth. In essence, Il Capitano is the comedy of inflated ego exposed.

IL CAPITANO’S RELATIONSHIPS AND MOTIVATIONS

Il Capitano usually arrives from a distant land, introducing himself with a dramatic, self-aggrandizing title far longer than necessary. He may seek favor with Pantalone, admiration from the audience, or affection from Colombina, all while attempting to outshine Il Dottore with stories of heroic achievement. However, he is quickly undone when challenged, frightened, or confronted with real danger. His motivations are driven by the desire to be admired — and the fear of being revealed as a fraud.

IL CAPITANO IN PERFORMANCE: PHYSICALITY AND MOVEMENT

Il Capitano’s physicality is bold, expansive, and commanding — until the mask slips and his cowardice emerges. He stands tall, chest forward, strides wide, and gestures with confident flourish. His movements are sharp and imposing, designed to convince others of his prowess. But the moment he is threatened, his body collapses inward: legs buckle, arms flail, and his proud voice breaks into squeaks or whimpers. The comedy comes from the sudden collapse of grandeur into panic — a hero undone by his own act.

Mask Care & Maintenance - Commedia dell'Arte Masks

Securing the Elastic

Each mask is supplied with a length of black elastic. Tie the elastic firmly for a secure fit, using a double knot to prevent it from pulling through the hole unexpectedly.

Putting the Mask On

To avoid straining the mask, place it gently over your face first, then pull the elastic over your head. This prevents the mask from being forced apart which can weaken or damage it over time.

Cleaning the Mask

Use alcohol-free wipes to clean the mask between uses. Do not use alcohol-based wipes, as they will quickly damage the glaze and paint finish.

Styling Eyebrows & Moustaches

Eyebrows and moustaches can be ‘restyled’ with a hair dryer or by being slightly moistened and left to dry in position.

Mask Storage

Store your mask in the supplied bag to protect it from dust and abrasion. Avoid leaving masks in direct sunlight for extended periods, as this can fade colours and weaken the paint finish.

Adjusting the Foam

The internal foam is shaped to suit a ‘generic’ face. If you need extra padding, you can add your own using a glue gun—apply glue to the foam, then press it into place. If the existing foam feels too thick, trim it carefully with nail scissors to achieve a comfortable fit.

What to Avoid

  • Harsh chemical cleaners
  • Contact with sharp edges
  • Exposure to heat sources
  • Prolonged direct sunlight
