Character Full Masks for Training and Performance

Character full masks in drama training

Something special happens the moment a performer puts on a full mask. The face disappears and everything else has to step forward — without facial expression or speech, performers can't rely on their usual habits and have to communicate through the body, fully and honestly. It can feel exposing at first, but that's also why it works. Students quickly discover that character isn't something you show, it's something you live through the body, and what emerges are characters that feel clear, grounded, and often surprisingly complex. It's why character full masks are so widely used in drama schools and physical theatre training — and why they can be such a gift in secondary and sixth form classrooms too.

Tone options

Our character full masks are available in Light, Mid, and Dark paint tones, as well as a Neutral Tone option. Neutral Tone masks are designed to provide maximum flexibility when working with diverse groups — they are not intended to represent any specific ethnicity, but rather the absence of one. Many drama teachers and practitioners prefer Neutral Tone for workshop and classroom settings, as they allow all performers to use any mask freely and without implied ethnicity.

Please note: Neutral Tone masks exist in a slightly different theatrical reality to the Light, Mid, and Dark Tone masks and can appear almost ghostly if used alongside them.

Material and construction

Our character full masks are made from high-impact thermoplastic — durable, lightweight, and hand-painted to a performance-standard finish. Available individually or as a set of eight varied characters. Made in the UK and shipped worldwide.

The Character Full Mask: A Living Tradition

Working with full masks connects you to a long lineage of theatre-makers.

From ancient Greek theatre to Roman comedy, performers have used full masks to amplify character and reach audiences in a direct, immediate way. These masks weren’t just decorative — they were practical tools, amplifiers if you like, helping actors project character clearly across large spaces and transform into something bigger than themselves.

That thread carries through medieval theatre, carnival traditions, and into Commedia dell’Arte — all the way to modern physical theatre.

In the twentieth century, practitioners like Jacques Lecoq brought mask work into contemporary actor training in a really structured way. In his pedagogy, character masks arrive at a key moment — after neutral masks and larval masks — when performers are ready to bring psychological life into their physical work.

So when you’re using character full masks in a class or rehearsal room, you’re not just doing an exercise — you’re stepping into a tradition that’s been evolving for centuries.

The Character Full Mask: Psychology, Physicality, and Performance

Full masks ask a lot of performers, but in the best possible way.

Though every mask is fixed, it is deceptively complex in the playing. Strangeface character full masks are designed to incorporate hints of several expressions — balanced rather than symmetrical, offering nuance. The performer is not trapped in one expression but explores these possibilities when 'going with the mask', often finding empathy and humour in its least expected qualities or 'countermask'. Whatever choice is made, the body has to fully support what the mask is saying.

The key, always, is that whatever choice the performer makes, the body has to fully support it. The mask sets the tone — but it’s the body that brings it to life.

Performers can't get away with indicating emotion — they have to commit to it. If they don't quite believe in the character, you see it instantly. The mask feels empty. But when they do commit — when the inner life is really there — the mask suddenly feels alive. It's one of those moments in training where everything clicks, and everyone in the room can see the difference.

Over time, this builds a much deeper awareness of physical characterisation. Performers start to notice the small things: how a character holds their head, how they breathe, how fast or slow they move, how their hands relate to the rest of the body. Nothing is neutral anymore. Every choice tells a story.

And the impact goes well beyond mask work. Teachers often notice that students who've worked this way bring a new level of clarity and confidence into their unmasked acting — their characters feel more grounded, more specific, and more alive.

Character Full Masks in Practice: Training, Devising, and Performance

A wonderful feature of character full masks is how adaptable they are across different settings.

In training, they really come into their own honing clarity of movement, gesture and intention.

In devising, they’re a bit of a gift. Put a group of masked characters in a space together, and relationships start to emerge almost immediately. Conflict, status, humour — it all appears without needing to be forced. Often, the story starts to write itself.

In performance, they create a bold, stylised theatrical world. Everything is heightened. Inner life becomes visible. Audiences are drawn in by the clarity and intensity of what they’re seeing.

When it starts to work and the performers are fully inside the work — something extraordinary is created. A deeply human world, with heightened levels of comedy and empathy that’s hard to achieve through naturalistic acting alone.
